We are the Year 6 class at Warren Hills Community Primary School.

Our class teacher is Mrs Reynolds and Mrs Smith is  the teaching assistant in our class.

PE this term will be on a Friday

Please ensure that your child has an indoor kit consisting of a Warren Hills P.E. T-Shirt, shorts and plimsolls and also an outdoor kit consisting of plain tracksuit bottoms or leggings, a Warren Hills P.E. T-Shirt, sweatshirt and pair of trainers. Long hair must be tied back and earrings removed (if your child is unable to remove earrings themselves, please ensure they are removed before school). 

We Love Reading

In our class, we know how important reading is to help us learn and we follow a reading scheme in our school called Read, Write, Inc. We each have a home reading folder to bring our books home in every day and a yellow reading record. We enjoy reading at home and know how important it is to practise with our parents/carers regularly to help us become successful readers.

A note from the teacher: Please ensure that your child brings their home reading folder back to school every day and remember to encourage them to spend some time reading either to an adult or independently each day.

Summer Term 1 2023-24

We’re off on an exciting expedition with Charles Darwin and his crew on HMS Beagle. Can you trace his route across the vast ocean? Stop at the magical Galápagos Islands to see the amazing species that helped Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution by natural selection. Do you know what’s so special about a lava lizard, or why the blue-footed booby has blue feet? See how animals adapt to their environments over time and meet some of the world’s greatest explorers and naturalists. Imagine how humans will evolve in millions of years. It’s a scary thought. Ready to trace the origin of species? Let’s set sail.

Spring Term 2 2023-24

A siren sounds, a building crumbles, a Spitfire zooms overhead. Take cover. It’s 1939 and Britain is at war. Deep down in the Anderson shelter, learn why nations are fighting and why child evacuees must make the long journey from their homes and families into unknown territory. Read the diary of Anne Frank, written whilst hiding from the terrifying stormtroopers in a secret annexe, and try to empathise with her hopes and fears. Make do and mend. Cook up a family meal from meagre rations. Delve deep into a bygone era, when loose lips sunk ships. And, as peace is declared, let’s get ready to celebrate. Mr Churchill says ‘It’s an unconditional surrender.’

Year 6 had a fanatastic day learning about what it would have been like to be an evacuee during World War II at Beaumanor Hall. We experienced life in a make-shift classroom, made dinner for our foster families and decoded German messages. 

We learnt that Beaumanor Hall played an important part in WWII. It was a station for listening to the German coded messages and it actually intercepted many messages that helped the allies to win the war. And really interesting, it was kept a secret throughout the whole of the war.  Beaumanor was not discovered by the Axis. 

Spring Term 1 2023-24

Frozen Kingdom. Welcome to the planet’s coldest lands. Vast wilds and hostile territories; incredibly beautiful, yet often deadly. Take shelter from the elements or fall prey to icy winds and the deepest chill. Trek bravely and valiantly across treacherous terrain to the ends of the Earth, treading deep in snow or being pulled by a team of mighty sled dogs. Be alert, for magnificent mammals roam these lands, sometimes hungry or fresh for a fight. Perhaps a hungry polar bear or an Arctic fox is hunting rodents, as swift as the wind. Research facts and figures of climate, temperature, habitats and ecosystems, and compose evocative poems about the Northern Lights. Become part of an Antarctic rescue team, braving the elements to rescue terrified passengers from a ship struck by a deadly iceberg that hides deep beneath the Southern Ocean. Wrap up well and settle by the fire. I’m just going outside and may be some time.

Text messages, emails, websites, blogs and podcasts. There are so many ways to communicate. Learn how to set up a class blog. Discover the movers and shakers in the world of technology, the people who’ve shaped the modern world. Perhaps you might be a visionary for the next generation. Build robots and circuits, break codes and investigate gadgets galore. Why not write a thriller narrative in the style of Anthony Horowitz? Then, on request from MI99, build a website for a new Spy School. What pages will it need? One for gadgets? A secret lunch menu? You decide. Let’s start today on Tomorrow’s World.

PGL Residential 2023

Last week we had an amazing time on our residential at Caythorpe Court. We did lots of exciting and sometimes scary activities. Many of us conquered our fears though and tried activities that we had never done before. Take a look at the photographs below to see just how much fun we had.

Welcome to Mexico. Get ready to explore this unique country, from its towering temples and stunning geography to its pulsing rhythms and fun festivals. Is your tummy rumbling? Concoct a traditional fruit cocktail or a delicious Mexican meal. What’s on your shopping list? Go steady with the spices. Discover the mysterious world of the ancient Mayan civilisation. Make their chocolate, learn their poetry, play their ball game and follow all of their curious rituals. Just try to keep your head. Feel like celebrating? Design a flute, grab a drum, join a tribe and make some noise. Have you got what it takes to be chief? Let’s find out

Year 6 had a great morning reading and following instructions to build an alligator out of Lego. They then programmed it to open and close its mouth.

Swimming this term will be on a Tuesday

Payment for this can be made on ParentPay at a subsidised cost of £1.50 per week. Please ensure your child has the appropriate kit of a one piece swimming costume or shorts, a swimming hat and a towel.

Pack up your pencils, pick up your paintbrushes and prepare to be amazed by the wonderful work of 19th and 20th century artists.

During this half term, we’ll visit a local art gallery to view an exhibition. We’ll talk about features of the artwork and sketch our favourite pieces. We’ll research important artwork of the 19th and 20th centuries online, choosing a favourite piece of art to describe in more detail. Using maps, we’ll locate art galleries around the world and calculate how much it would cost to get there. When we’ve gathered a range of materials, we’ll make beautiful sketchbooks and use them to collect ideas and inspiration. We’ll create pieces of art inspired by well known artists and use search engines to source images of modern art to put into a digital portfolio. We’ll express ourselves through poetry, stories, music and painting. Art can affect our feelings and emotions, and we’ll investigate whether everyone responds in the same way. We’ll also use found objects to create a surreal sculpture.
